HPC and the Cell Processor June 1, 2006Posted by nukemhill in Artificial Intelligence, Master's Thesis, Math/Science.
A summary article and the actual Berkeley paper on using the Cell processor (the basis for the PS3) as the basis for high-performance and scientific computing. I had a conversation with my advisor (Goran) a couple of weeks ago about using the Cell as the basis for hardware-based neural networks. He showed me a paper that demonstrated the feasability of using programmable arrays for neural networks and I immediately thought about the VPUs on the Cell. It seems like an interesting/intriguing possibility. A lot of what happens in neural networks is vector (array) computing, and that’s what the Cell does in spades.
I’m going to tweak him about it again in a couple of weeks.
